  4. Key messages. This review summarises current knowledge on alcohol drinking by children and associated factors. Alcohol use occurs in childhood, but younger children, defined as ages 0–10 years, are rarely included in research.

The data on alcohol consumption are therefore related to such other factors as the family, the school and the availability of alcoholic beverages. This review concludes by addressing the question of what schools can do to limit the harm caused by alcohol.
