• Key factors that seem to buffer the adverse effects of alcohol consumption in children and young people include informed and supportive parental guidance about alcohol and a delay in the age of initiation into drinking.
This essay begins by outlining the main social causes of alcoholism. It then identifies the underlying psy-chological factors and considers the complex relationship between social and psychological factors. Finally, the essay briefly introduces the two main types of biological depend-ence.
Key messages. This review summarises current knowledge on alcohol drinking by children and associated factors. Alcohol use occurs in childhood, but younger children, defined as ages 0–10 years, are rarely included in research.
In this summary of literature on alcohol use among younger children and adolescents, we show that younger children (aged 10 and younger) tend to be systematically overlooked. However, research, interventions and policy implementation strategies need to include younger children to mitigate the global burden of harmful alcohol use more effectively.
1 Ιουλ 2019 · Alcohol use is a major contributor to the leading causes of adolescent death (ie, motor vehicle crashes, homicide, and suicide) in the United States. Motor vehicle crashes rank as the leading cause of death for US teenagers and young adults.
Alcohol consumption is not an isolated issue in people’s lives. The data on alcohol consumption are therefore related to such other factors as the family, the school and the availability of alcoholic beverages. This review concludes by addressing the question of what schools can do to limit the harm caused by alcohol.
