What causes meningitis in a child? Meningitis is most often caused by a bacterial or viral infection that moves into the cerebral spinal fluid (CSF). The infection is typically caused by bacteria acquired from the birth canal, most commonly group B streptococci, Escherichia coli, and Listeria monocytogenes.
