Use Date & Time settings to set or change the date and time on your Mac. When the date and time are correct, time stamps on emails, messages, and files are accurate. Click Clock Options, then choose how you want the date and time displayed. Below Date, click the “Show date” pop-up menu, then choose either Always, When Space Allows, or Never.

With macOS 11 Big Sur, Apple moved customization options away from the Clock tab in the Date & Time preference pane, to System Preferences > Dock & Menu Bar.
