Chapel of the Chimes. If you know how I've spent some of my days off and how much time I've spent learning about Oakland history in local cemeteries, you can probably guess my reaction when I was asked if I wanted a tour of Chapel of the Chimes.

Chapel of the Chimes was founded as California Electric Crematory in 1909 as a crematory and columbarium at 4499 Piedmont Avenue, at the entrance of Mountain View Cemetery in Oakland, California. The present building dates largely from a 1928 redevelopment based on the designs of the architect Julia Morgan . [1]

Each summer solstice, 5 to 9 pm, Chapel of the Chimes hosts the Garden of Memory concerts, organized by the New Music Bay Area. The columbarium is a large building of intricate passages ways and small to medium sized chambers manifesting amazing acoustical clarity and effect.
