Chapel of the Chimes. If you know how I've spent some of my days off and how much time I've spent learning about Oakland history in local cemeteries, you can probably guess my reaction when I was asked if I wanted a tour of Chapel of the Chimes.
Chapel of the Chimes was founded as California Electric Crematory in 1909 as a crematory and columbarium at 4499 Piedmont Avenue, at the entrance of Mountain View Cemetery in Oakland, California. The present building dates largely from a 1928 redevelopment based on the designs of the architect Julia Morgan . [1]
In the 1920s and 1930s, organ music was broadcast live from the Chapel over radio station KRE and had a lease agreement with the Chapel. The station also did daytime broadcasts from Capwell Central Market, a department store across from H. C. Capwell's in downtown Oakland.
