So, how do I teach Character Education? I do it in 5 steps: 1. Model Positive Character Traits. I would never expect my kids to learn kindness if I didn’t display it myself. If I want them to be respectful, I need to be respectful of them as well. This day to day modeling of the traits that we want them to have is really key.
Each month, or cluster of months, our students will explore Character Traits that we are all trying to develop in ourselves. We will read books, hold class meetings, watch video clips, and learn about the power of these traits and what they look line in action.
Many schools have found that emphasizing a different character trait each month can be a successful, practical first step approach. When everyone at your site is reinforcing and modeling the same trait, students are more likely to learn that character trait.
Character education is a learning process that enables students and adults in a school community to understand and manage emotions, care about themselves and others, establish and maintain positive relationships, learn and use ethical values in everyday life, and make responsible decisions.
