Intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP) is a liver disease specific to pregnancy, characterised by pruritus and increased total serum bile acids (TSBA), with an Australian incidence of 0.6-0.7%. The pathophysiology involves genetic, hormonal and environmental factors.
Introduction. Intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP) occurs in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy and is charac-terized by pruritus and elevated serum bile acid levels.
Intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP) is the most com-mon liver disease specific to pregnancy. The cardinal symptom of pruritus and a concomitant elevated level of bile acids in the serum and/or alanine aminotransferase (ALT) are suggestive for the diagnosis. Overall, the maternal prognosis is good.
