Paul tells us that love is the greatest of the theological virtues: “So faith, hope, love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love” (1 Cor. 13:13). Our Sunday Visitor’s Catholic Encyclopedia entry on “Love” defines it as: [A]ny strong affection, closeness, or devotion to things or persons.

God loves us whether we respond to Him in love or not. His love for us is not based on our response, but on His character. The Bible says that God is love (I John 4:8, 16). Now, this does not mean that because God loves everyone people do not have any responsibility to respond to His love.
Love is not to be—cannot be—restricted to friends. Jesus said, “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you” (Matthew 5:43-44; Luke 6:27).
