In a dog with a life‐threatening disease and adverse gastrointestinal effects that needs ongoing cyclosporine treatment, options include administering the medication frozen (which appears to decrease nausea in some dogs) with food or both, or decreasing drug dosage.
The most common side effects of cyclosporine in dogs and cats are gastrointestinal side effects such as vomiting, diarrhea, and decreased appetite (anorexia). These side effects usually decrease over time. Other side effects in dogs include urinary tract infections, lethargy, gingival hyperplasia (overgrowth of the gums), and enlarged lymph nodes.
Cyclosporine is very well tolerated by pets at low doses. However, at high doses, side effects tend to be gastrointestinal (vomiting, diarrhea, and anorexia). Uncommon adverse reactions include otitis (ear infection), gingival hyperplasia, gingivitis, hepatotoxicity, anaphylactic reactions, nephropathy, and tremors. 9.
