The Small Arms Survey 2017[1] provides estimates of the total number of civilian-owned guns in a country. It then calculates the number per 100 people. This number for a country does not indicate the percentage of the population that owns guns. This is because individuals can own more than one gun.
The restrictions have kept the number of private gun owners in Japan extremely low. In 2017, only an estimated 377,000 guns were held by civilians in Japan, in a country of 125 million people.
The country is known for its strict gun-control laws, but recent shootings have prompted some to wonder how stringent they actually are.

Key findings. There were approximately 857 million civilian-held firearms in the world at the end of 2017. Roughly 100 million civilian firearms were reported as reg-istered, accounting for some 12 per cent of the global total.
