22 Σεπ 2021 · Only 21 players in the history of chess have held the official title of world champion, 17 of which held the "classical" title. With rare exceptions, the classical champion has been decided in a match between the sitting champion and a challenger.
Between 1993 and 2006 there were two world champion titles, the FIDE one and the classical one. The 2013 World Championship match took place between Anand and Magnus Carlsen (challenger) in Chennai , the capital of Tamil Nadu , where Anand grew up.
The following list is meant to show what is generally accepted as the World Championship lineage starting with Wilhem Steinitz and ending with Ding Liren. Lasker played three matches against Janowski over the course of 1909 and 1910, only the third match is considered a World Championship match here.
The current world champion is Ding Liren, who defeated Ian Nepomniachtchi in the 2023 World Chess Championship after the previous champion Magnus Carlsen had declined to defend his title. Liren is presently defending his title against Gukesh Dommaraju in the 2024 World Chess Championship tournament.
