Subtotal colectomy is a surgical procedure more commonly used in cats for megacolon, but has been used in dogs with variable results. The surgery removes the majority of the colon, leaving the unaffected portion of the colon connected back together.
Subtotal colectomy involves removal of 90–95% of the colon. The primary indication is for the treatment of obstipation related to megacolon. Other indications include trauma, perforation, neoplasia or irreducible intussusception.

Predominantly bony diet and/or low levels of physical activity may predispose dogs to acquired hypertrophic megacolon. Our results emphasise the long-term effectiveness of subtotal colectomy with preservation of the ileocolic junction in this condition.
Colectomy is the recommended treatment to eliminate the risk of colorectal cancer. Prophylactic surgery should be performed shortly after the diagnosis of FAP is established clinically by endoscopy.
