21 Ιαν 2023 · The gases ozone, water vapor, and carbon dioxide are only minor components of the atmosphere, but they exert a huge effect on the Earth by absorbing radiation in the ranges indicated by the shading. Ozone in the upper atmosphere filters out the ultraviolet light below about 360 nm that is destructive of life.
The atmosphere of Earth is composed of a layer of gas mixture that surrounds the Earth 's planetary surface (both lands and oceans), known collectively as air, with variable quantities of suspended aerosols and particulates (which create weather features such as clouds and hazes), all retained by Earth's gravity.
24 Μαΐ 2024 · The atmosphere is not a homogeneous mass of gases, but has a layered structure as defined by vertical temperature changes. Two broad regions can be identified using air composition as a means to subdivide the atmosphere.
From largest to smallest, Earth’s atmosphere composition contains nitrogen, oxygen, argon, CO 2, and trace gases. Because water vapor is highly variable geographically, it’s excluded from this total.
The mix of gases in the atmosphere forms a complex system organized into layers that together support life on Earth. Although there are numerous gases, as shown in Table 6.1, the top four gases make up 99.998 % of the volume of clean dry air (unpolluted air that does not contain water vapor).
19 Οκτ 2023 · Earth’s atmosphere is composed of about 78 percent nitrogen, 21 percent oxygen, 0.9 percent argon, and 0.1 percent other gases. Trace amounts of carbon dioxide, methane, water vapor, and neon are some of the other gases that make up the remaining 0.1 percent.
27 Αυγ 2024 · Composition of the Atmosphere. Nitrogen and oxygen together make up 99% of the planet’s atmosphere. The rest of the gases are minor components but sometimes are very important. Humidity is the amount of water vapor in the air. Humidity varies from place to place and season to season.
