Cury et al. demonstrate that homology search of antiphage systems in eukaryotic genomes can be utilized to discover human immune proteins. Bacteriophages are pervasive viruses that infect bacteria, relying on their genetic machinery to replicate. In order to protect themselves from this kind of invader, bacteria developed an ingenious adaptive defence system, clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR).
Animal and bacterial cells sense and defend against viral infections using evolutionarily conserved antiviral signaling pathways. Here, we show that viruses overcome host signaling using mechanisms of immune evasion that are directly shared across the eukaryotic and prokaryotic kingdoms of life.
