20 Δεκ 2023 · A condenser is an optical lens system that focuses and controls the illumination that passes through the specimen. Positioned beneath the microscope stage, the condenser is crucial in directing light onto the specimen. It contributes to the overall brightness and clarity of the image.

Different brands and different models of microscopes position the key parts differently. When you first sit in front of a microscope, you should always take a second to find the key parts, especially the focus knobs, the condenser adjustment knob (if present), and the stage control knobs.
Condensers are critical to obtaining sharp images at magnifications of 400x and above. The higher the magnification of the condenser, the more the image clarity. For a 40x objective lens, a stage mounted 0.65 N.A., or greater condenser is ideal.
On upright microscopes, the condenser is located beneath the stage and serves to gather wavefronts from the microscope light source and concentrate them into a cone of light that illuminates the specimen with uniform intensity over the entire viewfield.
Similar mechanical stages are available with the translational control knobs situated on the left-hand side of the stage for left-handed microscopists. The stage illustrated in Figure 1 also contains a rather large opening in the center to allow light from the condenser to pass through the specimen (the stage opening).
