Treatment of congenital lacrimal duct obstruction consists of initial observation for resolution followed by probing of children with persistent duct obstruction. Probing failures are treated with more aggressive surgical procedures including balloon dacryoplasty and nasolacrimal duct intubation.
15 Νοε 2015 · The majority of infants with NLDO spontaneously improve during the first several months of life. Therefore, most primary care physicians appropriately treat these patients initially with conservative measures. If infants have only mild symptoms, there may be no need for treatment.
8 Αυγ 2023 · The primary treatment of uncomplicated nasolacrimal duct obstruction (NLDO) is a regimen of nasolacrimal massage, usually 2 to 3 times per day, accompanied by a cleansing of the lids with warm water and topical antibiotics; this will resolve the infection in 76% to 89% of cases.
We conducted a large prospective non-randomized observational study of probing as primary surgical treatment of congenital NLDO, enrolling children from 6 to <48 months of age in whom a surgical procedure was planned. The timing of the procedure was determined by the clinician caring for the child.

We have conducted a prospective evaluation of primary surgical treatment of congenital NLDO in children 6 to 45 months of age. In this non-randomized study the investigator choose the procedure that they would perform, simple probing, nasolacrimal intubation, or balloon catheter dilation.
