1 Αυγ 2021 · This paper explores the concept of 'new' or modern slavery in the wake of media reports of widespread child slavery on cocoa plantations in Côte d'Ivoire (the RCI).
Aspects of slavery. A stream of evidence presented to United Nations human rights bodies, notably the Working Group on Contemporary Forms of Slavery, as well as studies and the findings of special rapporteurs, give an accurate picture of current slavery-like practices.
Slavery today. According to the Global Slavery Index 2018, over 40 million people are victims of modern slavery, and of these, 15 million are in forced marriage. Slavery involves violence, physical or psychological, and control – often in the form of threats in order to generate profit.

This briefing aims to clarify the concept of contemporary forms of slavery and analyse the legal obligations of States, as well as recent international developments at global and EU levels.
Modern slavery occurred in every re-gion of the world. Modern slavery was most prevalent in Africa (7.6 per 1,000 people), followed by Asia and the Pacific (6.1 per 1,000) then Europe and Central Asia (3.9 per 1,000). These results should be interpreted cautiously due to lack of available data in some regions, notably
