11 Σεπ 2022 · Here are general guidelines: Northern states: Apply at the beginning of May. Southern states: Apply potentially as early as February into early March. Many gardeners follow the rule of applying crabgrass killer in the early spring shortly after the flowering period of the forsythia bushes.
Crabgrass preventers should go down from mid-April to mid-May, which is often too early for fertilizing. For these reasons, I suggest to use caution with these products and carefully consider when would be the appropriate time to make applications depending on where you are in the state.

Apply crabgrass preventer in spring when soil temperatures rise to 55℉ (13℃) for 3 consecutive days. Crabgrass begins to germinate at this temperature and continues to sprout more vigorously as soil temperatures climb to 60–70℉ (16–21℃).
Apply a pre-emergent crabgrass herbicide about two weeks before crabgrass seeds begin to germinate. In mid-Missouri, this would be between mid March to mid April or about the time when forsythia first begins to bloom.
