The DRV Finder is an interactive tool that gives quick and easy access to EFSA’s DRVs for nutrients. It is intended for end users of these values, such as nutrition and health professionals, risk managers, policy-makers, food manufacturers and scientists.
Dietary Reference Values (DRVs) is an umbrella term for the complete set of nutrient reference values which include the Population Reference Intakes (PRIs), the Average Requirements (ARs), Adequate Intakes (AIs) and Reference Intake (RIs) ranges for macronutrients.
For macronutrients, cholesterol, fiber, sodium, and potassium, the DVs are based on Daily Reference Values (DRVs). The DRVs parallel the recommendations from the dietary guidelines regarding fat (less than 30% of energy intake) and saturated fat (less than 10% of energy intake) consumption.
In terms of nutrition labeling, when the Food and Drug Administration devised the U.S. Recommended Daily Allowances in the early 1970s there was national concern about the quality of the food supply and the RDAs were set as reference values to prevent deficiency disease.
The Daily Values (DVs) should be based on a population-weighted reference value. As noted above, a single reference value is most appropriate for the Nutrition Facts box, but this value must be designed to be meaningful for a base population that is 4 years of age and older.
