The Daily Values (DVs) should be based on a population-weighted reference value. As noted above, a single reference value is most appropriate for the Nutrition Facts box, but this value must be designed to be meaningful for a base population that is 4 years of age and older.
Based on two sets of reference values, Daily Reference Values and Reference Daily Intakes, which provide nutrients on labels that compare a food's nutrient content to recommended intakes of those nutrients to help consumers compare nutritional values of food products (FDA, 2009).
Dietary Reference Values are estimates of the energy and nutritional requirements of different groups of healthy people in the UK population. 1 There are different DRVs for different ages and genders, plus separate advice for pregnant and breastfeeding women.
Dietary reference values (DRV) are estimates of the daily amounts of nutrients or food energy that meet the needs of healthy people. In the UK, three terms are used to express these estimates, assuming a normal distribution of requirements in a population.
WHAT ARE DIETARY REFERENCE INTAKES? The reference values, collectively called the Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs), include the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA), Adequate Intake (AI), Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL), and Estimated Average Requirement (EAR).
This chapter describes the evolving process of setting nutrient reference values (NRVs) from a single value to a multi-level approach designed to address multiple users and needs. This multi-level approach with some modifications has been adopted by several authoritative groups.
