13 Σεπ 2024 · This article presents an overview of the current state of drug and alcohol use in Texas, highlighting alarming statistics on substance use and related arrests, the opioid epidemic, and the challenges in providing adequate treatment and recovery services.
Marijuana is the most frequently used illicit drug among Texas middle and high school students: 22% say they have used marijuana at some point in their lifetimes, and 14% report using it in the past 30 days (Figure 6). These numbers show a slight increase from 2016 (21% and 12%, respectively), which mirrors national trends as well. Figure 6.
Shifting attitudes and legal changes have changed perceptions about marijuana use, but the risks remain the same: impaired driving; academic, relationship, behavior and emotional issues; and increased likelihood of addiction or use of harder drugs.
