This paper reviews theory and research on the evolutionary psychology of violence. First, I examine evidence suggesting that humans have experienced an evolutionary history of violence. Next, I discuss violence as a context-sensitive strategy that might have provided benefits to our ancestors under certain circumstances.
First, evolutionary psychology provides the only currently cogent meta-theory for the entire field of psychology (Buss, 1995). As noted by Boyer and Heckhausen (2000), “Evolutionary psychology is arguably one of the most important new developments in the behavioral sciences over the past 20 years” (p. 917).
Evolutionary theory promises to circumvent the plethora of seemingly arbitrary personality theories by anchoring a theory of human nature in processes known to govern all life.
