  1. 22 Απρ 2019 · Here's how to spot and avoid 5 common family history scams, including the popular family inheritance scam, fake coats of arms and misleading services.

  2. You appear to have fallen victim to heraldic fraud. The “family crest” (which is a misnomer) is sold by bucket shops (companies pretending to find out your coat of arms but really just using a random one), by having you enter your surname and then they sell you paintings such as this one, mugs, etc.

  3. Whilst the designs look reminiscent, I’d say ours looks a bit more distinct / unique than what’s on these obvious scam websites, and my Dad agrees that there are lots of scams out there. My question is, how legitimate is the history of this crest?

  4. I’ve seen my 'family crest' for sale on another website or in a shop, is this trade legitimate? Websites and shops selling 'family crests' (see next FAQ) or coats of arms are, at best, selling an image of someone else’s arms.

  5. My bucket shop "family crest" is: Or, a lizard argent on a fess vert, between 3 boars sable. The boars (or swine) are canting. I have no idea what the lizard represents. It's incredibly ugly. It was a good day when I discovered that it was a just scam and I could assume my own arms instead.

  6. 14 Μαΐ 2014 · Since professional genealogists commonly hear questions such as “where can I learn why more about my surname’s history?” and “where can I find my coat of arms?” it’s important for those new to genealogy to have an understanding of commercial scams that have popped up around genealogy.

  7. 4 Μαρ 2018 · There are, unfortunately, many companies in business today who will sell you "your family coat of arms " on a t-shirt, mug, or 'handsomely engraved' plaque. While these companies are not necessarily out to scam you, their sales pitch is very misleading and, in some cases, outright incorrect.
