The current definition of health, formulated by the WHO, is no longer adequate for dealing with the new challenges in health care systems. Despite many attempts to replace it, no alternative definition has reached a wide level of consensus.
The purpose of this article is to clarify the meaning of health, starting from the analysis of the definition of health stated by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1948, highlighting its strengths and its critical aspects.
