World War II Ships. These ships of the line were still considered the central components of the navies of all world powers at the start of the war, but by the war's end, these floating fortresses found their roles dramatically changed at the face of air power.
During Operation Dynamo in 1940, the Little Ships played a crucial role in evacuating British and Allied soldiers trapped on the beaches of Dunkirk. The Little Ships were civilian vessels, such as pleasure boats, fishing boats, and yachts, which were requisitioned by the British Navy for the evacuation mission.
