5 Ιουν 2023 · Informed consent is the process in which a health care provider educates a patient about the risks, benefits, and alternatives of a given procedure or intervention. The patient must be competent to make a voluntary decision about whether to undergo the procedure or intervention.
This practice guideline provides an overview of the major features of the legislation, pertinent definitions and the steps nurses need to take to obtain consent. It does not address consent under the Mental Health Act. It also does not address consent for medical assistance in dying.

Informed consent is a process. The patient’s signature on a document does not, by itself, constitute informed consent. Rather, the process of informed consent includes providing the patient with information about his or her health status, diagnosis, treatment options, and prognosis.
