1 Σεπ 1999 · Meta-analysis, the systematic and quantitative synthesis of evidence, has developed considerably in the 1990s and is emerging as an important methodology in medical decision making. As a research methodology, meta-analysis has benefits and limitations that must be acknowledged in its application.
Data mining is a process of systematically, and automatically or semi-automatically, uncovering patterns in data (Witten, Frank and Hall, 2011). It is typically conducted on very large datasets that would be difficult to examine sufficiently through traditional descriptive and inferential approaches.
In this paper, we highlight current methodological issues, discuss advantages and disadvantages of commonly used techniques, and suggest steps to be taken to maximize the reliability and usefulness conclusions from pooled data analysis in decision making.
