(2019) definition of recovery, an abstinent individual who is struggling with abstinence, experiencing considerable distress, and who disengages with their social environment would be considered “recovered,” solely because he or she is abstaining and does not meet criteria for AUD.

SAMHSA’s definition was developed in collaboration with a large group of stakeholders who were brought together in 2010.
