Demodectic mange with secondary infection is treated with antibiotics and medicated shampoos. For more severe generalized cases, Amitraz is a parasiticidal dip that is licensed for use in many countries (the only FDA approved treatment in the USA) for treating canine demodicosis.
Treatment of demodicosis is weakly evidence based. In the therapy, mostly used topical sulfur products are: permethrin and ivermectin [1, 3]. Facial Demodex infestations are also susceptible to doxycycline, erythromycin, dilute topical camphor and metronidazole [1, 3].
Short courses of metronidazole taken orally have shown efficacy in reducing Demodex density. Additionally, topical administration of permethrin daily or twice daily was shown to be efficacious across multiple studies. Crotamiton and benzyl benzoate were also efficacious treatments.
