The survivors of the Donner Party settled throughout California, and some became quite well known with numerous descendants. Helen Whitworth is a member of the McCutchen family. Her great-uncle was William McCutchen, a hero of the Donner Party, who rode ahead for supplies and returned with the Second Relief.

Reed the original group set out with 33 people in 9 covered wagons consisting of family and hired hands. Frances Donner (grave in the picture) was among those in the party and the daughter of George Donner.

It was widely circulated that members of the party resorted to cannibalism after their food ran out, giving the party its lasting notoriety.
