Desolation Wilderness is co-managed by the Eldorado National Forest and Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit. For reservations and specific information on fees, permits, trail information, and the zone quota, visit Recreation.gov .
In order to protect its unique beauty and wilderness character, human access is limited and certain activities are restricted in the Desolation. There is a quota on overnight use from the Friday before Memorial Day through September 30 of each year.

22 Μαρ 2011 · Permits can be obtained online or in person at offices which issue Desolation Wilderness permits. Where exactly do you want to camp? Look at the Zone Map to determine your desired Destination Zone for your first night stay.
21 Φεβ 2023 · The permitting system ensures the wilderness area is not overused and overcrowded. Desolation Wilderness uses a zone permit system which is destination based and divides the wilderness into 45 zones. Zones are numbered from north to south and a Forest Service map of the zones can be found here.
