This study expands the limited empirical knowledge of patients with lower limb amputation due to diabetes mellitus. The study takes a novel approach based on resilience to the protective and risk factors influencing the outcome of traumatized patients’ adaptation to their altered physical condition.
The present study found that the impact of diabetes-related amputation was significant for body image disturbance. However, it appears that other psychosocial outcomes are better accounted for by medical co-morbidities common in this group rather than the amputation itself.
