1 Ιαν 2020 · In this paper the question of how to distinguish languages and dialects was addressed by studying the distribution of lexical distances within groups of uncontroversially related languages (the genera of Dryer and Haspelmath [2013]).
Yet what do linguists mean by dialect? Dutch is much closer to German than is English. Somebody from Amsterdam cannot understand someone from Munich if both are speaking their native dialects or their standard national language. But there is considerable mutual compre-hension on both sides of the German/Dutch frontier.
Dialectology, obviously, is the study of dialect and dialects. But what exactly is a dialect? In common usage, of course, a dialect is a substandard, low-status, often rustic form of language, generally associated with the peasantry, the working class, or other groups lacking in prestige.
