The translators wanted to create a new translation that would retain the stylistic beauty of the original KJV.
The major difference between the KJV and the NKJV, is that the King James Version 1611-1769 (the Authorized Version, so called) was written by the Bishops of the Church of England specifically to support the Ecclesiology and doctrine of that Church.
The New King James Version was first published in 1982 and is a modernization of the King James Version of 1611, using the same underlying Greek text for the New Testament.
