11 Νοε 2022 · Here, we review recent studies on the role of fungi in the skin microbiome, emphasizing how fungal–bacterial interactions at the skin surface play an important ecological function in vertebrate hosts. Current Opinion in Microbiology 2022, 70:102235.
10 Μαρ 2018 · Malassezia are lipid dependent basidiomycetous yeasts that inhabit the skin and mucosa of humans and other warm-blooded animals, and are a major component of the skin microbiome. They occur as skin commensals, but are also associated with various skin disorders and bloodstream infections.
15 Ιαν 2018 · In this Review, we describe amplicon and shotgun metagenomic DNA sequencing studies that have been used to assess the taxonomic diversity of microorganisms that are associated with skin from...
22 Μαΐ 2013 · Microbial sequencing of samples obtained from multiple skin sites in healthy human adults shows that core-body and arm sites are dominated by fungal species of the genus Malassezia, whereas...
Sequence analysis revealed that Malassezia is the most abundant fungus on many human skin sites, as previously shown for the scalp (Gemmer et al. 2002). These authors cultured three of the human-associated Malassezia species: M. globosa, M. restricta, and M. sympodialis.
However, it has become clear that Malassezia plays a multifaceted role in human health, with mutualistic activity in atopic dermatitis and a preventive effect against other skin infections due to its potential to compete with skin pathogens such as Candida auris.
9 Νοε 2011 · Most of the fungal species that infect humans can grow in more than one morphological form but only a subset of pathogens produce filamentous hyphae during the infection process.
