First and foremost, this is a tool for people who want to make their own weapons for 5e and have them statistically balanced with the options in the Player's Handbook. Secondly, this is a description of the "reverse engineered" underlying framework for weapons in 5e.
I made this system in order to help fighters and other martial classes be able to 1. have a diverse set of weapons for different situations and 2. be able to do some area of effect damage, like casters. I have done a lot of calculations using a Dice Calculator, so it should be balanced overall.
If I were to run a game with this, I'd allow players to use certain loot to add traits to items they craft without spending points. Add dragon claws to any slashing weapon for a free Lacerate. Add troll bones to any bludgeoning weapon for a free Overwhelm. Etc...
