The main difference in types of lobsters can be seen by the claws or pinchers. The American or Maine Lobster has large front claws while the Florida Spiny Lobster does not. The clawed lobsters are often called cold water lobsters due to their normal habitat locations.
Commonly referred to as the Florida spiny lobster, the Caribbean spiny lobster inhabits tropical and subtropical waters of the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, and Gulf of Mexico. Spiny lobsters get their name from the forward-pointing spines that cover their bodies to help protect them from predators.
Spiny lobsters can be easily distinguished from true lobsters by their very long, thick, spiny antennae, by the lack of chelae (claws) on the first four pairs of walking legs, although the females of most species have a small claw on the fifth pair, [6] and by a particularly specialized larval phase called phyllosoma.
True (American) lobster has claws on the first four legs, which the spiny lobster does not. Spiny lobster has a pair of horns above the eyes, which the true lobster does not. To avoid confusion over common names, we call the true lobster the "American lobster," and the spiny lobster just that.

The true lobster has claws on the first four legs, lacking in the spiny lobster; the spiny lobster has a pair of horns above the eyes, lacking in the Maine lobster. The spiny lobster is found in warm waters off Florida and southern California, while the American lobster lives in the Atlantic Ocean from Newfoundland south to New Jersey.
