Illinois regulates animal breeders through licensing and registration by requiring all commercial breeders to obtain a license from the Illinois Department of Agriculture. This process includes an inspection of the breeder’s facilities to ensure they meet state and federal standards for animal care.
No person shall engage in business as a pet shop operator, dog dealer, kennel operator, day care operator, dogbreeder, or cat breeder or operate a guard dog service, an animal control facility, or animal shelter, in this State without a license therefor issued by the Department.
If in the state of Illinois you are classed as a “breeder,” you will be required to apply for a license from the Illinois Department of Agriculture. This license expires on the 30th of June annually and must be obtained prior to becoming a member of RPB.
