Most dogs are highly susceptible to heartworm infection, and most (mean 56%) experimentally administered infective larvae (L3) develop into adults. Ferrets and cats are susceptible hosts, but the infection success rate is low (an average of 6% in cats and 40% in ferrets).
It is caused by a blood-borne parasite known as Dirofilaria immitis. Adult heartworms are found in the heart, pulmonary artery (one of the big blood vessels from the heart), and adjacent large blood vessels of infected dogs. Rarely, worms may be found in other parts of the circulatory system.
