What is the treatment for antifreeze poisoning in dogs? There are a number of treatments that your vet can use to support your dog, including two antidotes to antifreeze, but ideally these need to be given soon after your dog has drunk the antifreeze.
Treatment involves reducing further absorption of ethylene glycol by inducing vomiting or flushing the stomach (or both), followed by administration of activated charcoal and sodium sulfate within 1 to 2 hours of ingestion.
Symptoms & Signs. There are three stages of ethylene glycol poisoning: Stage 1. 0-12 hours after ingestion - Nervous system signs develop including mild depression, dizziness, dragging of the feet, seizures, hyperexcitability, stupor, rarely coma, and death. These signs are similar to acute alcohol intoxication and resemble drunkenness.
