Over 80% of city government positions require you to take and pass a civil service exam. Standardized testing helps ensure the hiring and promotion processes are fair, competitive, and result in the City hiring the most qualified candidate for the job.
If you meet the basic requirements of the job, you can apply for your exam online or at one of our testing centers. Our testing centers are located in every borough and are open Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., except major holidays and scheduled closures. Which Exam is Right for You?

Through OASys, aspiring and current City employees may apply for exams and pay for application fees online, obtain information on their scheduled test sessions and the results of their exams, and become eligible for merit-based civil service positions.
To apply for a civil service exam open during this application period, please apply online via the DCAS Online Application System (OASys) at www.nyc.gov/examsforjobs. DCAS Computer-based Testing and Application Centers (CTACs) have re-opened to the public. Walk-ins are available during operating hours.
