Doric columns are one of the classical orders of ancient Greek architecture, characterized by their simplicity, sturdy structure, and lack of ornate decoration. They represent the earliest and most basic style of columns in Greek architecture, often seen in temples dedicated to gods and goddesses.
The Doric order is characterized by a plain, unadorned column capital and a column that rests directly on the stylobate of the temple without a base. The Doric entablature includes a frieze composed of triglyphs and metopes. The columns are fluted and are of sturdy, if not stocky, proportions.
The Doric is most easily recognized by the simple circular capitals at the top of the columns. Originating in the western Doric region of Greece, it is the earliest and, in its essence, the simplest of the orders, though still with complex details in the entablature above.
THE DORIC ORDER - MUTULARY. The Doric column is very similar to the Tuscan model but has more refined elements. The base is D high with a square plinth 8/6 D wide by D high. The upper half of the base consists of a torus, bead, and fillet.
