I would personally suggest starting with .Hack//Sign, followed by a Let’s play (or actually playing if you can find or emulate them) the first 4 games from ps2. You can choose to go through .Hack//Legend of the Twilight Bracelet if you want (I suggest the manga over the anime but the anime is fine).
While I love the .hack games, I think a real game based on The World would be incredibly boring. The entire gameplay loop is put together words at a chaos gate, go to and complete the field and/or dungeon, get loot leave repeat.
