Professor Sir Ali Zumla is globally renowned for his leadership of health policy relevant research and for his outstanding and extensive outputs in infectious diseases, tropical medicine, with a focus on TB, HIV and respiratory diseases.
Previous studies have estimated the number of deaths associated with drug-resistant infections and sepsis and found that infections remain a leading cause of death globally.
Professor Sir Alimuddin Zumla is professor of infectious diseases and international health at University College London. He is also a consultant infectious diseases at UCLH, honorary consultant at Royal Free Hospital, and holds a UK NIHR senior Investigator award.
He nearly lost his life to meningitis when he was working as a junior doctor in London in 1982. He subsequently progressed to a meteoric, star-studded, and extremely successful career focussed on tackling killer infectious diseases.
