Alcohol. Ethyl alcohol is rapidly absorbed, metabolized, and eliminated after oral ingestion. Urine drug screening of alcohol intake is infrequently used in clinical practice. Blood tests or hand-held breath devices are typically used in prac-tice settings to assess alcohol intake.
Alcohol concentration is performed by headspace gas chromatography with flame ionization detection (GC-FID) (reference method to demonstrate intoxication potential in blood). Serum may be submitted, but is not preferred. Urine alcohol concentration is not a good indicator of intoxication.
