I will warn you ahead of time, I am not a mechanic and usually rely on this forum, Youtube and more knowledgeable people in my life to figure stuff like this out.

  2. 24 Νοε 2010 · The block heater is simply an element (kind of like a probe) in the coolant stream in the block. When plugged in, power flows thru it and causes the element to get hot. This heats (or warms) the coolant in the block.

I took my truck in to a repair shop I trust to get an estimate. I'm sure they use the standard shop time estimate manual, which says 5 hours of labor are required ($800 repair with parts).
