Edwin McMasters Stanton (December 19, 1814 – December 24, 1869) was an American lawyer and politician who served as U.S. Secretary of War under the Lincoln Administration during most of the American Civil War. Stanton's management helped organize the massive military resources of the North and guide the Union to victory.
Edwin McMasters Stanton was born in Steubenville, Ohio, on Dec. 19, 1814. He attended Kenyon College but was forced by lack of money to leave before graduating. He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1836. He moved to Pittsburgh, Pa., in 1847 and to Washington, D.C., in 1856.

Edwin M. Stanton (born December 19, 1814, Steubenville, Ohio, U.S.—died December 24, 1869, Washington, D.C.) was the secretary of war who, under Pres. Abraham Lincoln, tirelessly presided over the giant Union military establishment during most of the American Civil War (1861–65).
Stanton was an early advocate for an emancipation proclamation. Stanton was also concerned about the former slaves who crowded around the Union Army camps; he wanted to put the slaves to work, ideally putting the men into uniform as Union soldiers.
