O Deus Ego Amo Te, the first line of two Latin lyrics sometimes attributed to St. Francis Xavier, but of uncertain date and authorship. The one whose first stanza runs:— O Deus ego amo te, Nam prior to amasti me; En libertate privo me. Ut sponte vinctus sequar te,
This is a hymn about love of God and the Kingship of God. It is a translation of the Latin "O Deus, ego amo te", which is attributed to St Francis Xavier - and was itself perhaps based on a Spanish sonnet "No me mueve, mi Dios, para quererte".
The Latin text, ‘O Deus ego amo te’, is found in the Coeleste Palmetum (Cologne, 1669) of a Jesuit priest, Wilhelmus Nakatenus. It was a translation of a Spanish sonnet, ‘No me mueve, mi Dios, para quererte’, which was printed in Epitome de la vida y muerte de San Ignacio de Loyola (Roermond, 1662).
