Electron configuration diagrams. An electron configuration diagram is a model that depicts the position of electrons as they orbit the nucleus of an atom. Electrons are represented by dots or crosses and are positioned in energy levels, or ‘shells’, around the central nucleus.
Orbital diagrams are pictorial representations of the electron configuration, showing the individual orbitals and the pairing arrangement of electrons. We start with a single hydrogen atom (atomic number 1), which consists of one proton and one electron.
Electron configurations and orbital box diagrams can be written right from the periodic table. The periodic table below, shows the s, p, d, and f-blocks. When reading the periodic table from left to right, one can easily write an electron configuration without memorizing the filling order.
Orbital configurations are used to show how many electrons are in each atomic orbital; orbital box diagrams note how many unpaired electrons there are in an atom and in which direction those electrons are spinning. Orbital box diagrams can be easily constructed in Microsoft Word with text boxes.

An orbital diagram is the more visual way to represent the arrangement of all the electrons in a particular atom. In an orbital diagram, the individual orbitals are shown as squares and orbitals within a sublevel are drawn next to each other horizontally. Each sublevel is labeled by its shell and sublevel. Electrons are indicated by arrows ...
