At over 2,700 acres (11 km 2), the sanctuary consists of three separate and protected, natural habitat environments for Asian and African elephants; a 2,200-acre (9 km 2) Asian facility, a 200-acre (0.81 km 2) quarantine area and a 300-acre (1.2 km 2) African habitat.
Founded in 1995, The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee is the nation’s largest natural habitat preserve developed specifically for the needs of Asian and African elephants. Spanning 3,060 acres, it is located in Hohenwald, Tennessee, approximately 85 miles southwest of Nashville.

The Sanctuary now contains separate habitats for Asian and for African elephant herds (as in the wild, herds are made up of only females), heated barns for inclement weather, large fenced enclosures, and a quarantine facility for sick elephants.
